Last week we said we’re considering changing our style for the possessives of proper names ending in s.
We asked: Keep just the apostrophe, as it now is, or change to an additional s plus the apostrophe (Wes’ vs. Wes’s)?
Passions are high on both sides of the question. (1/3)
You asked: Why consider changing?
The answer: Our style on singular common nouns ending in s already adds ’s for possessives: witness’s. So we contemplate: For consistency, should the style be the same for proper names ending in s as for singular common nouns ending in s?(2/3)
Strunk & White uses Charles’s, Burns’s, etc., as do many others.
To be clear: We haven’t changed anything on this point. We may or may not change in the future. We are greatly interested in your thoughts. We embrace the public debate on this and all questions. (3/3)
