I was raised by a single mother and was so poor I couldn’t afford new clothes or shoes for school. I expected nothing and demanded nothing. My mom worked three jobs and I spent a formidable part of my youth being cared for by various other family members. Have a million seats.
I was the kid that couldn’t participate in the class Christmas exchanges because we couldn’t afford it. My mom and I changed our stations in life because when there wasn’t opportunity, we created it for ourselves.
It’s just as offensive to me now as it was then to assume that I (or my mom) wasn’t strong enough to change my station in life without big gov making it “fairer.” Demanding something that isn’t yours is greed, not charity.
I also look to Scripture regarding stewardship, and Paul’s remakrs on being a “cheerful giver,” not by force, but by blessing others through your blessings. Coercion doesn’t allow for spiritual edificiation, which is the point missed. /rant
