Brian, it’s disingenuous to label criticism as “hate.” An odd take for 2 reasons:
1) This
and
2) CBS and ABC are persecuting a whistleblower for showcasing network effort to nix a story about a pedophile and his relationship to Bill Clinton
He’s criticizing media @brianstelter . Your network literally allowed me to be called a child hating murderer, innocent gun owners “terrorists,” and your network stood by a story that the source admitted he lied about washingtontimes.com/news/2018/aug/… , plus money.cnn.com/2017/12/08/med…
The same in media that doxxed a forklift operator, meme maker, elderly woman from a FB group, allowed members of gov’t to refer to innocent people as “terrorists” unchecked take umbrage when criticized and portray themselves as victims? Please.
I’ve watched many in media do this to people since before the tea party formed. It’s gotten worse — and so has the criticism of this bias. I remember when a cable network cropped out the skin of a black protestor to avoid showing diversity at tea party rallies.
I remember when tea partiers were maligned on air — with few exceptions provided by some in defense. I give Anderson Cooper credit as he reached out many times to air a counter to that malicious narrative. Such action is rare anymore.
I remember when Occupy Wall Street emerged and the same media that maligned a peaceful tea party ignored actual felonious activity committed by OWS participants and zealously ran cover for them.
I watched as many in media were happy to celebrate voters they thought were supporting Hillary but when those voters crossed the aisle and voted Trump, suddenly those longtime Democrat voters were racist bigots in MAGA hats.
I have had a front row seat to this, when not targeted or watching good people I know targeted. You should value a free people’s right to criticize their free press as much as you value a free press. One cannot exist without the other and both are cornerstones to our republic.
But let me tell you this — it’s NOT the “deplorables” ruining media. It’s not Trump ruining media, just like it wasn’t Bush that ruined it, or whichever GOPer partisans want to use to justify their uncontrollable bias. It’s just that: UNCONTROLLABLE BIAS that’s ruining the press.
No one is demanding that a journalist drop their political beliefs in exchange for a byline — heck, I zealously defended (and was thanked on air) Keith Olbermann when MSNBC suspended him for a political donation. What a free people are asking is that you contain your bias.
If you *aren’t* an editorialist and can’t prioritize the reader or the viewer above your political affiliation then you’re in the wrong industry. That’s literally ALL a free people are asking. That doesn’t seem like too much.
So in conclusion, please, stop playing victim when you’re criticized over blatant bias. Instead of martyring yourself and demanding a free people serve you, ask yourself if you’re really in this to serve and inform a free people — because honestly? We’d like for you to be.
