whoa. there are a NUMBER of reasons a person would go to an abortion provider rather than a hospital to finish a miscarriage. Allow me to share a few here:
1) any sort of procedure to finish a miscarriage that is done in a hospital is far, FAR more expensive than one in a clinic. When I had a simple D&C for a missed miscarriage, my procedure cost $3000 - and $1500 out of pocket. This was WITH “good” (ie: employer) health insurance.
2) Getting a procedure scheduled into a hospital can take days to set up. A procedure in a clinic - especially in a state like CA - could probably be done w/in 24 hours. Anyone who has had a missed miscarriage or fetus that was lost in utero knows EXACTLY what that delay is like
3) Increasingly doctors aren’t learning any non-medication abortion procedures. They can’t do an aspiration because they weren’t trained. Med schools are leaving it out (THANKS, CONSERVATIVES). And even more are not teaching D&E. It’s difficult to find a “public” dr who knows it.
4) You know who is THE BEST at doing procedures that ed a pregnancy? People who DO A LOT OF THEM. If you are going to have a procedure done, do you want a doctor who has done it 10 times before, or 200 times before?
When I found out at my 12 week checkup that I had a missed miscarriage, it never even occurred to me to look to an abortion provider. Instead, I called up doctor after doctor to find one who was trained & in my network. I had to talk about my loss over&over while it was so fresh.
I waited three days, every second thinking about what was in me, how I couldn’t end things on my own. Never did it occur to me I could visit a clinic. That’s how deep the stigma is, even though it is the EXACT SAME PROCEDURE.
Wanting to see a lesser trained, less experienced dr just to stay away from a clinic that could see you faster? That’s stigma. & abortion opponents want you to internalize it so much that you would put your health more at risk just because of it. Stigma is physically dangerous.
