Went down rabbit hole of @sriramk's memos page, and it is a highly recommended rabbit-hole to fall down!

1. @BillGates' memo on moviemaker is hilarious, although I can only imagine how I would have felt *receiving* that memo. Take away: entropy is real, even (especially?) for Windows XP.

2. @stevesi memo on computing at cornell. All students had computer accounts since '75! TCP/IP as common language across VAX/PDP/Prime/Sun/Macintoshes/etc managing cost of heterogeneity. Software to run it all was free. The internet: not a fad.

I love how well this memo goes from "there is this huge transformational change happening here!" to "here are very specific concrete tasks for us to take now." Inspiring.
3. Elop on Nokia's platform/ecosystem strategy, cheerfully likening their platform to a burning oil rig that need to jump off before Apple and Android burned them to a crisp.

Elop's note is a compelling, concise takedown of their strategy, but doesn't offer any solutions. Which I suppose history supports at this point :/
4. Sequoia's Youtube seed-stage investment thesis from '05. Interesting to see advertising as a slightly less proven market at that point. Also interesting emphasis on urgently bringing on new CEO is one I hadn't realized existed previously.

5. Butler Lampson's XEROX memo on the Alto. First, a reference to Kay's eternal Dynabook project. Target languages: Lisp, Bcpl, MPS. Outperform PDP-10!

Lampson is amazing, btw, if you haven't read his work, Hints for Computer System Design is a personal favorite

Ok, some meta-thoughts on the memos: wow, these are so concise and readable. Narrative driven but with just enough data to prove the analysis happened. Forceful and clear without being angry/condescending (except bill's, which is both).
Makes me want to refocus on being a much more concise writer, especially in my business writing.
And! Someone made excellent point that these are all written by men. Let's cast a broader net for the great technical memos of history written, starting now:
