am teaching network dynamics this week; my fave example comes from neuroscience. TLNs = threshold-linear networks are simple system that model firing of neurons that can excite neighbors based on a directed graph. this leads to interesting periodic & chaotic dynamics. 1/3
on its own, each neuron is simple: connected in a network, structure emerges. the great thing is that the (excitation) network can tell you what the dynamics will look like. this in near the research frontier: can you formulate conjectures based on a few simple examples? 2/3
i learned about these networks from the research of carina curto & her collaborators. you can find a very well-written paper on these network dynamics here: arxiv.org/abs/1605.04463 there's also matlab code: github.com/nebneuron/CTLN
