Very unpopular opinion but after analyzing the #CanM17 WC performance and discussions after being predominately “the best kids aren’t in the 3 academies” we completely disagree and these opinions even though partially true for the future. The best 2002’s/2003’s were selected
The players selected just didn’t represent the 3 academies but were actually scouted from surrounding communities around Canada. Prime example Fachinerri the starting CB is originally from Windsor, ON and is on the VANCOUVER whitecaps residential academy.
Canada Soccer doesn’t necessarily have all the resources (money) to scout every single youth league in Canada but with regional programs like the Whitecaps & Toronto FC have in place + local tournaments like International Cup (MTL) & BMO Cup (TFC).
90% of the best players normally do pass through the academy system at one point or another by the time they are U17.
Prime example of this was starting midfielder Deandre Kerr. Kerr was playing Whitby OPDL at U17.
He was identified by TFC talent evaluators and has progressed through the TFC academy system at a rapid pace, eventually making and starting for #CanM17.
To outsiders who haven’t done their due diligence they will just group him in the “MLS academy system” when in fact he’s probably more of a @WhitbyFc player (not part of the MLS academies) then anything else.
Being we live in a North American soccer model and for the most part the only clubs where you don’t ‘pay to play’ are the MLS academies they naturally attract the most talent. They also train the most, and arguably have the best resources outside of the pitch
Few academies,Sigma, Foothills (who still send their best to Whitecaps) , etc develop players at a better/ same rate but until there are more non ‘pay to play’ systems in place **cough #CanPL cough* generally speaking 90% of the top talent will end up at the MLS academies.
In conclusion the result from the U17 team shouldn’t be criticizing the system of picking from the 3 academies. Rather looking at our developmental system as a whole or maybe suggestions that this age group 2002/ 2003 just aren’t as talented as others across the world.
With that being said save this tweet for the future as the 2004 boys from Canada are arguably our most talent group since the 2000 age group of Alphonso/ Jonathan David.
Also if you aren’t on the grounds watching these players everyday please refrain from just “bashing” Canada Soccer, it’s getting old.
We understand this won’t be very popular but would love to have any discussion with similar or differences of opinion
