1. By my count this is the third big election night since 2016 when the Democrats have ridden to victory on a big blue wave. So can we please calm the fuck down?
2. I mean it's understandable why Democrats are nervous after 2016 when Trump won a fluke-y electoral college victory. And work needs to be done to assure that doesn't happen again. But fear is a mindkiller. It's clarifying to keep an eye on the big picture.
3. Fear is the mind-killer: the prospect of a Trump re-election is used as a cudgel to force Democrats to be more cautious. But at least in the special elections, what we're seeing is an energized party where even the most moderate candidates are more progressive than before.

1. If Bloomberg joins the race, there will be more billionaires running in the Democratic primaries than African-American women. Also more guys worth more than $250 million than African-American men.
2. If Bloomberg is in, there are more guys worth $250 million in the Democratic primaries than Latinos, than Asian-Americans, than openly gay Americans.
3. So there's no dearth of mega-rich guys in the race. Nor is there a a dearth of centrists. What does Bloomberg offer than isn't offered by Biden, Bennet, Booker, Bullock, Buttigieg, Delaney, Harris, Klobuchar, & Sestak.

1. I've heard some people say that Biden is being cynical here, that he really doesn't believe this & is just saying it because it appeals to the older, centrist Dems who are his base. I want to argue on behalf of Biden's sincerity. He really thinks this.
2. The thing with Biden is that trans-ideological friendship isn't just a matter of rhetoric, it's a core part of his identity. It always has been, which is why he has so many stories about working with the likes of Strom Thurmond.
3. Biden is a man neither of the left or the right, but of elite friendship. He's buddy Biden, the guy who can bring people together and make deals. The enormous personal tragedies he's suffered is part of that -- it's made him open to people.

A generous attempt to disentangle exactly what Bill Gates meant by saying he'd pay $100 billion in tax. I think it's a fair point that Gates meant over a lifetime, but.....
...but even if what Gates is saying is that he'd pay $100 billion over the course of a lifetime (if he lives to be really, really old) the math still doesn't work. Because the money he has would be growing as well. He'd still be one of the richest men alive.

Summers in Detroit are too fucking hot, Hank thinks, on a particularly miserable, humid July night. He remembers them being hot and miserable when he was a kid, especially that summer the a/c broke and his parents couldn't afford to fix it for a month. He'd felt like he was
melting every night as he tried to sleep, but he knows it's even hotter now. Just a bit warmer, every year.
Still, Sumo needs to go out; he does better with a real walk at night, not just a snuffle around the yard.
Hank does too, he's realized.
So: as the summer progresses,
Hank takes him for walks later and later until he's clipping on his leash no earlier than 9:30, when the sun's at least mostly down. It's pitch black by the time he's far from home, but Hank finds that he likes being out that late. Sometimes the fireflies are still out then, too.
