#GDR #OTD 1957 – Production of Trabant P-50 begins at the VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke in Zwickau. (1)
The Trabant had a two-cylinder, two-stroke engine with only five moving parts and a body primarily created from Duroplast – a plastic strengthened with resin and fibers. (2)
3,096,099 Trabants were produced in Zwickau, East Germany between 1957 and 1991. (3)

Jarzembowski sets out the Polish position as dawn broke on 20th August.

The Eastern sector, under squadrons of the 2nd Armoured Regt and infantry from the 8th Battalion, looked down over gentle open slopes. It would face relentless attacks from Bittrich's II SS-Panzerkorps.

A neat bit of physics history #OTD. There is an apocryphal story about the great physicist William Thomson — Lord Kelvin — in which he surveys the state of physics at the end of the 19th century and judges it nearly complete.

Likewise, comments attributed to the physicist Albert Michelson (especially in an 1894 speech) suggest that he thought there was very little left to do in the field, except perhaps take more detailed measurements of various properties of matter.

These stories are always a set-up for a punchline: Physicists of the era thought the fundamental questions had all been answered, when in fact there were deep and fatal problems with their theories. Perhaps they were too attached to familiar ways of thinking to notice.

I’m going to explore this little know attempt at “Liberty or Death” through the story of one man, John Baird. First a loyal soldier, then a deserter, a weaver, and finally a rebel. It’s going to be a long thread and spread over a couple of days, hold on to your hats.
Baird joined the 2nd battalion of the 95th Rifles in Glasgow in 1806. Promoted to bugler, he was sent with the battalion in the expeditionary force commanded by General Whitelocke to attack Napoleon's Spanish allies in Buenos Aires.

Very Brief Background: Britain was still imposing a blockade of France as well as a stop & search of ships from other countries with materials that may be headed to France.

Russia began organising a coalition as they weren't happy (Denmark, Sweden and Prussia)
In December 1800 the coalition agreement was signed and The Second League of Armed Neutrality was formed.

Ofc Britain saw it as an alliance with France... 

March 1801: British fleet heads to the Baltic to break it up.
