What they really mean is “We’re mad that society is getting more accepting of non-Christians, because it means we’re losing control of society.”

But they won’t come out and say that, so they rally around a lie that makes them the victim.
Culture warriors don’t just want the right to be intolerant. They don’t want anyone else to act otherwise. That would mean they aren’t the only ones making the rules. In their heads that’s a subversion of the natural order, which makes them feel like victims.
“Happy Holidays” is an expression of pluralism, and religious pluralism specifically. Pluralism is the opposite of Christian supremacy. People only feel attacked by “Happy Holidays” because they believe in their own supremacy. They just don’t have the honesty to admit it.
@C_Stroop has written a lot about the nexus between white fundamentalists, anti-pluralism and authoritarianism. And I think that’s the exact place Fox’s “War on Christmas” comes from.
