He's not even upper middle-class. Ulysses is a prole playing at aristocracy. He's Quebecois, a nation that lost its upper classes after the Seven Years' War. Their elites are all kulaks, J.K. Rowlings, desperately trying to signal their way into a class they will never belong to.
This is historical fact. After the Seven Years' War, when France surrendered its North American colonies to Britain, the people with money packed up and went home, leaving behind the people too poor and dumb to afford the journey. End result: generational dysfunction.
Quebecois are basically the aliens from DISTRICT 9: a low-IQ caste in desperate need of overlords. The smarter ones migrated to the U.S. (like my ancestors), the dumb ones stay behind and puff their chests out about their "uniqueness" (read: inbreeding and prostitution).
Quebec is basically Las Vegas crossed with a West Virginia trailer park. Single motherhood, atheism, anomie. I remember hanging out with a Frenchman in Montreal who derisively described Quebecois as "French-speaking Americans" who had nothing in common with the motherland.
Prolefied cultures breed "elites" who are desperate to signal their allegiance to the ruling class. Hence why in places like Quebec and Ireland, you have balls-to-the-wall poz in the form of gay prime ministers and psychotic hatred of Christianity.
