I think so many people are convinced you have to carry ID because police do stop and ask young Black and Brown people for ID all the time and, if they don't show it, they do arrest them.
But that's illegal harassment. And the arrest charge will have nothing to do with ID.

Because there is no law on the books that requires you to carry ID. And the police are so used to doing this, they even trip up themselves - which is how they ended up tweeting this.

This is why it is so important to know what your rights are, but again also why it is important to exercise your own judgement when interacting with police as to what you can do to most protect your own safety.
