Today's an exciting day for my lab as a paper came out for which we collected data for 4 years and then spent 3 years writing up the results. With contributions from nearly everyone in my lab at the time--this one gets a special thread. pnas.org/content/early/…
The main findings: overall, the 300+ trans kids don't differ from 500+ cis kids (including sibs of trans kids) on measures of gender development, in terms of means + distributions.
We find no significant associations between how long it's been since someone socially transitioned and the strength of their gender identity of degree of gender-typed preferences (e.g., for toys, playmates, etc).
First shout-out goes to our fearless leader @selingulgoz who basically completed a second diss & faced a lot of ups and downs, but kept our ship steered in the right direction. She played a critical role on every page, including on the 80+ page supplement.
@selingulgoz Next up, second-author, Jessica Glazier, our lead data analyst, master R script writer, who found all of the bugs the rest of us missed. Next to her is @EA_Enright who made 25 tables (!), then remade them several more times. Both collected data and edited the manuscript.
@selingulgoz @EA_Enright Then we have Daniel Alonso (who is applying to grad school!), who was one of our main data collectors over the years. He also oversaw most of the massive data entry and management and is a superstar data detective who figures out when and why data aren't where they should be.
@selingulgoz @EA_Enright Next up, Lily Durwood, supplement text drafter and all around go-to expert on the topic, and @anneafast who assisted in table making, proof reading, stat checking. (Both like nearly everyone else, helped with data collection).
@selingulgoz @EA_Enright @anneafast Then we have Riley Lowe, master scheduler, data collection trip planner, data collector extraordinaire, and data manager. Gabriella Ji, honors student, data enterer, data checker, and there for all the last minute needs.
@selingulgoz @EA_Enright @anneafast We were fortunate to have @Jeffrey_Heer as our data viz lead &finally, the one & only Carol Martin, all around gender dev expert who helped us craft arguments, make better points, & situate our findings. She made it thru so many drafts I'm not sure why she still talks to us.
@selingulgoz @EA_Enright @anneafast @jeffrey_heer Bottom line -- this was a 12-person team effort in the most profound way. People stuck with this project for years, devoting countless hours when we had no idea if anyone would be interested in taking it. These folks are why my job is so wonderful!
@selingulgoz @EA_Enright @anneafast @jeffrey_heer Thank you to the anonymous reviewers who made the work better and to the families without whom we would have no results to report.
