Thought I’d do a quick 🧵

We illustrate the “biological embodiment” of social adversity, or how it “gets under the skin” by acting on -omics processes (e.g. genomics, epigenomics 🧬) thus altering body structures & functions and impacting oral & systemic health. @iadr #jdr 1/6
This cumulative biological toll on several body systems (i.e. allostatic load) occurs over the life-course, plausibly having a larger impact when adverse exposures occur during sensitive periods of development. 2/6
Biological embodiment is a concept derived from the biopsychosocial model to health; initially motivated by the siloed view of disease as being a biomedical problem. 3/6
What are some benefits of understanding the biology of social adversity as applied to oral health? 4/6
1. Strengthening the argument on the social origin of oral disease, potentially motivating policy & public opinion i.e. demonstrating that the consequences of precarious social conditions can get as deep as leaving an imprint on biological factors that trigger oral dx. 5/6
2. Providing an opportunity for an integrated and comprehensive approach to risk prediction modeling that includes social, psychosocial and biological factors, potentially enhancing precision interventions. 6/6
