On one holiday evening many years ago, a woman was dying and we couldn’t reach her family. A RN climbed into her bed with her and wrapped her arms around this woman and repeated “you are not alone” over and over until she died. #ABnurses
One night in emerg, a patients family member was yelling at me and being very aggressive. An RN was paying attention, and called security, who arrived just as the family member grabbed both my arms and pushed me into a wall.
An RN working in ICU taught me how to break bad news more compassionately and more effectively than anyone else.
An RN in CCU gave me Tylenol and a popsicle when I had pharyngitis in call. She also put her hand in my forehead, which was just very nurturing #ABnurses
I was a medical student the first time I had to pronounce a patient, and I completely froze. The bedside RN said “Why don’t you start listening to the heart for one minute while I get a flashlight for you to check their pupils?” in the kindest, most helpful way possible #ABnurses
There is an LPN on the unit I work most often who includes residents and medical students in his comfort rounds, bringing them water and cookies at the work stations
On my first day of residency, I ruined my shoes during a code (don’t ask). A unit RN went to the emerg and got me new shoes to wear for the rest of my 26 hour call shift so I didn’t have to wear my ruined shoes.
