If Congress sought a democratic stamp for Partition, why did they not push for the CR Formula, where a referendum was proposed in every Muslim majority province?

Eventual division of the country was on the basis of religion. Plain n simple
There was no democratic basis for partition. At least none that baked in Hindu aspirations or the Hindu view on the same in Muslim majority areas

Partition happened because Muslims of the subcontinent backed it strongly

Boundaries were based on the math of religious demography
If a democratic stamp was sought, you should have had a referendum in EVERY muslim majority district, involving BOTH Muslim and Hindu populations

If you had done that, regions like Lahore and Karachi would have acceded to India

Always sceptical of this progressive urge to pick a metric and talk of optimizing it as a "good thing"

Something doesn't seem right

There is no such thing as an "optimal" female labor force participation rate
Here's the labor force participation rate for Women from the World bank site (since 1990)

You see a decline from 51% to less than 48% in a span of 30 years

The world has gotten immeasurably richer in the same period
Does that mean we should discourage women from working?

No...

It just tells you how silly it is to turn such metrics into optimization targets

When challenged on his critique of caste, he falls back on feudalism which has very little to do with caste

It's all v well to be prejudiced. But declare your prejudices. Don't conflate things

If caste is such a big deal, how do these guys account for the significantly greater prosperity of several Southern Indian states where caste is arguably MOST stringent in terms of endogamy?

As compared to North Eastern states, where caste is quite weak
On his point around feudalism, large parts of North India are just as feudal

Much of that can be linked to a shared history of Islamic rule and its extractive institutions

Would Acemoglu buy that? And blame Islam for the relative poverty of Northern South Asia?

I’m a lover of film and the theatrical experience. I will pay money to see classic films that I already own in a theater. But I gotta drop some hard truth bombs.

Tentpole, spectacle film isn’t killing the theatrical film industry: they’re life support that keeps theaters open.
Some form of the expensive Summer blockbuster has been dominating the box office since 1977, and jam-packed Summer tentpole schedules have been going strong for decades. These did not suddenly chase mid-budget films to TV in the late 2000’s.
The simple fact is that large flatscreen TV’s have become cheap and they’ve proliferated to the lower-middle class; the advent of broadband internet and rise of KODI piracy and streaming giants has given millions and millions of struggling workers easier options to see new movies

Today in pulp I look back at one of the most influential and outrageous illustrators of the 1970s, whose work defined the Italian fumetti horror scene: Emanuele Taglietti!
Emanuele Taglietti was born in Ferrara in 1943. His father worked as a set designer for director Michaelangelo Antonioni, often taking Emanuele with him on set.
In the 1960s Taglietti moved to Rome, where he studied stage design. He began a successful career as an assistant art director, working for Federico Fellini and Marco Ferreri.

For the last 40 years economists have shown little interest in the enterprise systems that form the backbone of the global economy. Why should they change their tack now? Bc they're again on the brink of missing out on understanding how technology shapes the way the economy works
If one is to believe some accounts, blockchain is a fairydust-based rocket propellant that will help us all travel to the Moon in no time, and make us younger, richer, more democratic, and more equal in the process.
If you ask others, the story sounds more prosaic: we are talking about an overengineered database for keeping accounting records: a massively redundant, energy-sucking transaction log. The whole thing is also more than a bit scammy.
