So you want to learn #rstats? I’ll tell you about my favourite learning resources in a minute, but first… some tips and tricks. 1/n
Tip 1: Find a reason. It is tough to get motivated to learn something new when your old workflow, while inefficient and not reproducible, gets the job done. If you try to learn #rstats in service of a real project, you are more likely to persevere. 2/n
Tip 2: Make it fun with side projects. Try sentiment analysis on Jane Austen novels juliasilge.com/blog/you-must-… Or learn regular exp by on analyzing your bank trans data r-bloggers.com/analyse-your-b…. Check out #tidytuesday for vis practice datasets 3/n
Tip 3: Do it your way. Option A: Maybe baby steps works for you; start by trying to replicate an analysis you have already done or choose a package and see how it might help you deal with data in your work (I recommend `janitor`, `dplyr` or `ggplot`) 4/n

Tip 3: Option B: Or maybe baby steps doesn’t work and going cold turkey might be better. My SPSS license expired on my laptop and I decided I just wasn’t going to get it updated. I NEEDED to learn how to do everything in R. 5/n

Tip 4: Find a community. You will want to quit; you will end up in the “learning pit” and it will all feel too hard. Navigate the “pit” with friends, whether that is #rladies, #codeclub, #r4ds, or #tidytuesday. Share your pain on twitter and we will jump in and help! 6/n
Tip 5: Blog about it. I’m going to tweet more about blogging tomorrow, but in the meantime…

what are your tips for #rstats learners ?? 7/7
