Morning! So here's a few more of my tricks for emulating the amazing coding I've seen from people using R and RStudio!
For example did you know you can hit Tab between "" & it shows you the directories + files in your current workspace?
Do you know the name of the file you're looking for but no idea where in the folder structure it is? No problem, type a few chars of your file name btw "" and hit Tab -> the chars you typed are replaced with the path to the file you're looking for.
Ctrl + . -> Opens a popup where you can search for functions in your script or Files in your folder.
Ctrl + Shift + F -> opens a "Find in Files" popup - you can look for a particular ggplot etc.

First up: The LASSO family

Perhaps the most popular ML technique in economics is LASSO - a variable selection technique. The R package 'glmnet' gives users a range of distributions of the response variable to choose from: normal, binomial, poisson, multinomial,cox and others!
Interaction terms in the model are common in econ (& other soc. sciences). Want to select interactions along with the main effects? R package 'hierNet' implements Hierarchical LASSO. Users can choose the kind of hierarchy condition based on the research Q!
In grouped data, we might want to select variables from among groups as well as within group level. Check out Sparse-Group LASSO using R package 'SGL'.

OK. So you're claiming that mice show "autism-like" behaviours. You'd better have strong evidence of social impairment, right?
This is the data from the 3-chambers test - ubiquitous in mouse studies of autism.

Each box is a kid. Each dot is a mouse who received their gut bacteria from that kid's faeces sample.

This morning I attacked my problem of showing hierarchical clusters without just making a dendrogram tree (left pic). Lots of plots were made in through the course of the day to get to the plot on the right, so I decided to show the whole process #dataviz 1/5
First approach was putting the unclustered graph into Large Graph Layout. I have to consult my own blogpost to run the program, so I guess write for yourself clairemcwhite.github.io/lgl-guide/. The graph is too dense for even the magic bullet of LGL to get good separation w/o clustering 2/5
Next series of plots in R with ggraph, still using unclustered graph. The graph is too dense to all of these, but they look cool. 3/5

Why I like it: Investment in rolling out / scaling ZKP tech, zero knowledge systems in general, generally just more investment in privacy and anonymity tech (yay), the funding model for the foundation and the core team is also innovative.

3. Export d3.js graphic as SVG from notebook
4. Finish graphic in Adobe Illustrator
5. Run ai2html to publish on the web

👉🏿 @observablehq let's you create interactive notebooks with data and code beta.observablehq.com. Rather than setting up a local build development for your charts, you can do it all from the browser. You can also share your work with your colleagues. Great for collaboration.
