2019 was a fun year @TheBlock__

We saw our audience top 1 million. We rolled out two paywalled products. And have got into quite a number of colorful Twitter conversations.

Here's a look back at some of my favorite scoops of 2019:

An honorable mention of this gem from IW. A definitive look at how exchanges fake volumes. They blamed "rogue employees"

@Twitter I drafted a tweet on my phone but of course, can't access "draft's" on the desktop. So lets maybe start there. The desktop and @Tweetdeck version should be MORE robust than the mobile app not less. Tweetdeck, for example, has no bookmarks, emoji's, live video, polls, gif's, etc
@Twitter @TweetDeck There are SO MANY great meaningful quotes, threads, replies, and conversations that vanish into the Twitter ether, drowned out by hot takes, snark, and 280 character riffs on what some influencer or politician just did. Find a way to collect and resurface this treasure trove.

Look, like other folks living outside the state of Mexico, I was surprised to learn that "quesadilla" doesn't necessarily mean "a folded tortilla full of cheese" in Mexico City, but just "a folded tortilla with ... like ... anything inside."

Surprised, but not scandalized.

I mean, just think about the word's origins. Before the Conquest, we know from Enrique de Villena's 1423 Arte cisoria, Spain had quesadas, a sort of not-sweet cheese cake.

And Alfonso de Palencia's 1490 Universal vocabulario tells of "cheese empanadas we call quesadillas."

These appear to have been a little like modern empanadas, half-moon confections.

Perhaps these are what Francisco Gómez de Quevedo meant when he wrote "tras quesadilla y roscón."

But maybe he was talking about something sweeter.

Twitter seems to be banning or suspending accounts belonging to critics of the Chinese government. It started yesterday May 31th. Here is one report - I noticed a sudden loss of followers yesterday, I checked, it was mainly China critics. Twitter❤️🇨🇳 Amazing! @mouse @1GigiSims
This is happening as an effort to silence #China critics ahead of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which is next Tuesday. Twitter is helping China do its dirty work to silence the legitimate opposition. Twitter has hit a new all time low! 👎👎👎
One other possibility that can't be discounted is that the #Chinese government is hacking into Twitter and is deleting the accounts of Chinese critics. I did hear reports in the past, that Chinese hackers were able to get into Twitter & do that.

Speaking of eggs, in 2013 Bill Gates and Peter Thiel backed Hampton Creek Foods (now known as JUST, Inc.), with their San Francisco startup, who rolled out two eggless products in California Whole Foods stores.

Uche was one of those students in school who occasionally wore bogus long sleeved shirts...

A geek eyeglass, an afro, a black duffle bag and a brown shoe that shares the same oddity with Uche's choice of clothing, was also part of his signature appearance.
