I rarely write about my family, so I hope this finds its way to you.

(Deep breath, here goes).

This is my father, Li (or Ray).

For the past few years, he's asked me to write a letter for him addressed to you so he could share this old Boston Globe cartoon.

"I want you to write a letter to Shaq," he would ask with a glint in his eyes. "Show him this cartoon. It's funny."

And for the past few years, I kept putting it off, thinking he'd forget.

I mean, how am I supposed to get in touch with Shaq?

But he is nothing if not persistent. Especially when it comes to the Lakers.

You see, my dad has been a @Lakers fan since the 1980s, when he visited L.A. for a few months.

That was enough to make him a lifelong fan, even after moving to the New York and then the Boston area, home of the Lakers' arch rivals.

I grew up following the Dream Team (Magic was my fave, because Magic!).

My dad, now 87, falls asleep listening to Lakers sports talk on YouTube, though he's never been to a game.

So here I am, hoping that Twitter is the best way to reach you, Shaq.

I will make a copy of this to show my dad I finally did write the letter.

My hope is that you send a reply saying you saw this, so I can share that with my dad.

In his wildest dreams, he can send you a copy of this cartoon so you can sign it for him.

Wow you guys, I'm speechless! Thank you for sharing my story. Even if Shaq never sees it I can tell my dad hundreds of people have!
