@cnnbrk 1/ For most, nicotine addiction only works during adolescent brain development (peak -5-19, but varies ~10-24 years, yes often into early 20s). See esp CA3-4 in
CA1-4.
Adolescent-brained people do not always make good decisions, even if physically adult.
@cnnbrk 2/ Big Tobacco has known this for at least 4 decades (see CA4/ on 1980s origin for Joe Camel) & Big Tobacco has some of best & well-funded marketeers in world, sble to convince adolescents onto path to eventual miserable deaths (lung cancer, COPD. At least heart attacks quick.)
@cnnbrk 3/ Peruse @Stanford’s fine SRITA website: Big Tobacco does *terrific* marketing (and that doesn’t include movie placements):

@cnnbrk @Stanford 4/ If somebody over age X wants to start smoking/vaping, feel free... but maybe talk to oncology nurses sometime first.
Big Tobacco knows teen+young adults are *last* time to addict folks into being lifelong profitable customers.
Best marketeers vs adolescent brains: fair fight?
@cnnbrk @Stanford 5/ Big Tobacco hires great lawyers & lobbyists (like Manafort & Stone decades ago) to help them keep addicting adolescents, see:
TL0-49
@cnnbrk @Stanford 6/ Vaping may help some quit smoking, and serious public health folks think that’s good when people actually quit, but often it’s an addition & smoking+vaping seems worse than either alone.

@cnnbrk @Stanford 7/ Mom never could quit cigs, died of lung cancer at ~63, likely would have lived longer had vaping existed, although she had heart problems & nicotine likely => heart attack death, but less bad than lung cancer after year of chemo. She would have fiercely fought teen vaping.
@cnnbrk @Stanford 8/ In 2913, Big Tobacco finally realized vaping was real, was either buying startups or creating own & thinktanks got marching orders.

Watch Jenny McCarthy’s commercial for Blu:
@cnnbrk @Stanford 9/ That was pre-Juul & even pro tobaco-control folks were surprised (one expert heard only from teen daughter) when it came from nowhere to take ~70+% of market, unsurprised when Altria bought 1/3, replaced CEO. But Juul had great marketing even before:
