Artist formerly known as the Battersea Power Station is down there....always something to land at Heathrow on a roughly similar approach as Luftwaffe bombers took along Thames but then turn north to bomb midlands - my late grandfather (served in WW1) was an air raid warden in WW2 
There are very good books on pre WW2 London and you can see what it looked like pre bombing and then the often awful rebuilding postwar. If people wonder why British nostalgia for standing alone in WW2 is such a force in 2019, the often ugly rebuilt environment is a reminder
Should note that I recently wrote a piece praising Clement Attlee even though my father and his parents were postwar economic refugees from Attlee’s socialism and taxes/duties. Whither, indeed, you may say. But poor Mr Churchill turfed out after seeing Britain through the war
Story was that Mrs Clementine Churchill told Winston that his losing the 1945 election was in fact a “blessing in disguise”. To which a very depressed Churchill replied, apparently, “well, if it is a blessing it is very well disguised”.
May have told this story before but my late father often talked about taking apples as a boy from the family's trees to give to the Canadian soldiers mustering nearby Bourne End (it turned out for D-Day). Dad said VE Day was sad for many boys as WW2 was "all very exciting"
Other amusing story was my late father was evacuated in 1940 to the Malvern Hills where everyone thought children would be safe from bombs. No one knew - or apparently needed to know - that near Malvern was a secret RAF HQ the Luftwaffe wanted to bomb ("no one asked questions")
