I don't know who needs to hear this, but January 1 is a special day of rebirth and fresh chances, but it's also just a day.

I'm hearing a lot of "suicidal subjects" on the scanner and it reminds me of some of my darkest moments.

So, if you will, hear me out.
I'm not an expert or a counselor, but I've been in some deep wells of despair. One consistent thing I've experienced in those pits is the feeling that I've always been there.

I hadn't. You haven't. Tomorrow is January 2 and it's just a Thursday. The day after that is a Friday.
One day, you'll wake up and you won't feel the pain and despair you feel today. Your brain is tired and sick and it won't let you believe there's a light at the end of the tunnel, but there is! It's coming and it's glorious. Your future self is waiting for you to get through it
But that pit is cunning. It tells you that, deep down, you've never been happy. That, too, is a lie. You have been happy! Those moments in your past were real and while your memories are tainted by the lens you use today, it doesn't change the realness of them and the value
Don't give up. Today is a day it's natural to compare yourself to everyone else. But you're looking at them all wrong. EVERYONE is messed up. EVERYONE is miserable in some way at some time. We're all just doing our best. You're not uniquely sad or depressed.
The guy who posted a pic of his successes in 2019 is worried his marriage is crumbling. The woman on the beach every weekend has a mountain of credit card debt. Your sister is obsessing over a doctor's visit where she heard a scary piece of news. It's that way for all of us.
Today is a fresh start. Use it as one. If you're scared to take another step, take it anyway. You'll be shocked when you wake up tomorrow and that step is just a step. Then...take another one. And another one.
Whether it's addiction or mental health, a great lie is that recovery starts one day and the bad things end. That's not the way it works. It starts and stops and starts and stops. You slide back and move forward. But you cross the days off and one day, a whole month is gone.
You are valuable. You are loved. You are funny and have ideas nobody else has. People love you and you're not a burden on those you love. I promise you. I've felt those things. They weren't true for me, either. You're not alone on this -- any of it. We're all with you.
