Today marks 5yrs since I saw this in the paper while having my morning coffee &posted on Twitter.
Thus began of one of my most precious threads, even though I managed to break the continuity a few times.
However, I'm breaking &restarting the thread again 2day.
2
.. since the thread continuing unbroken becomes a bit too large for Twitter to handle, as has handled before when the longest unbroken phase was approx 2.5 years.
Thanks to The Indian Express & their free of cost 'Salute the Soldier', irrespective of space ..
3
.. it eats up on the newsprint, the stories and faces of a small percentage of the nation's martyrs are chronicled. A lot will be repeated this year again, some won't be, and yet thousands will remain unsung & unwept.
Glad they lived amidst us.

It's been a humbling journey indeed, chronicling their stories out here.
I don't know how long I will be able to carry on, but God has been kind thus far. Let's hope it continues for as long as it can.
God Bless their souls.

Now coming to the story of the young officer whose obit triggered this thread - Lieutenant Triveni Singh, Ashok Chakra (Posthumous).
Lt Triveni hailed from Pathankot, his father too a retired army officer.
Young Triveni was a martial arts expert who had ..
2
.. won numerous awards at National level during his student days.
After graduation, he joined the Indian Military Academy & got commissioned into Fifth Battalion The Jammu And Kashmir Light Infantry in December 2001, just short of Operation Parakram.
3
His moment of glory would come soon thereafter, on the evening of 02 Jan 2004, when his unit was posted in Jammu.
He received a message that two heavily armed terrorists had attacked the Jammu Railway Station and was ordered to rush there with the unit's ..
4
.. Quick Reaction Team.
By the time he reached there, the Pakis had already killed seven innocent citizens.
Not wasting a moment, he deployed his men to cordon off the station and in a swift move, dispatched the first Paki before he could realize that the ..
5
.. Indian Army was there.
The second terrorist was quickly sighted, firing at civilians and own boys from an overbridge.
Triveni quickly gave chase and forced the terrorist to change his position.
However, this brought the terrorist close to the parcel room ..
6
.. where a large number of civilians had taken refuge.
Realizing the gravity of the situation and seeking to avoid collateral damage, Triveni held his fire and quickened his pace and grabbed the second terrorist, wrestling him to the ground and dispatching ..
