#Sweden - #Mortality deaths per months 1980-2020

"I think it's like a severe flu season"
Professor Johan Giesecke

(update, putting all charts into one single pinned thread )
#France - deaths per months 1980-2020

In January 2017 more people died than in April 2020. But we saw no TGVs with ICU patients, and had no #crisesainitaire.
#Germany - deaths per months 1990-2020

In 2017/18, Germany was faced with the deadliest flu season of the last 30 years. Nobody took notice. We missed it. @Markus_Soeder did not protect us. And we had plenty of toilet paper.

Hearing starting in #Belgium parliament on #OECD BEPS 2 negotiations.

I will be live tweeting. #TaxTwitter

Follow yourself here:…
Belgium has been in the Steering Group since the very beginning of the process. Officially it has lost its seat now, but it will remain present till Oct 2020.

Belgium has defended so far a not too ambitious position. On pillar 2 it defends an extremely weak position. More below.
In pillar 2 Belgium defends a global blending with carve-outs. Doing so Belgium wants to protect its patent box. The patent box in Belgium leads to an ETR below 4%. It is one of the most aggressive patent boxes in the world.…

Thread: Wearing masks is our best defense against the #coronavirus.

@WhiteHouse press secretary said today that masks are no longer required in West Wing. Many tweets also advise against masks.

Result: Colossal failure of the US #COVID response.…

An example of anti-mask rhetoric can be seen in the video below by a Mr. Huff. I will explain why everything that he says here is scientifically incorrect and a danger to public health. (I do not know Mr. Huff or his motivations.)

I am not comparing the US to the several dozen countries that have mostly controlled this epidemic, e.g., #Taiwan, #Iceland, #SouthKorea, #Japan, #Thailand, #NewZealand, #Australia, #Austria, #Switzerland, #Greece, #Norway, etc. Some of them never even had to lock down.

#Germany #Netherlands #Belgium #Luxembourg #Eifel area #Vulcanism

The earth rises in the Eifel. Very little, by a millimeter a year - but for a long time. At the same time, the surface of the earth moves horizontally apart, as if something is pushing upwards from below.
This has been proven for the first time by US scientists. In a study, they evaluated measurement data from thousands of GPS antennas in Western Europe over 20 years - and thus came across new evidence of a still active volcanism in the Eifel region.
"The Eifel is the only region in the study in which the ground movement was significantly larger than expected," says lead author Corné Kreemer from the University of Nevada in Reno. "The results suggest that rising rock material could cause this movement of the soil."

Thread: Predicting #COVID deaths in the US from 8k to 100k.

I started predicting the US COVID death toll ~2 months ago. All of my predictions to date have proven accurate. The most painful predictions I have ever made.

Why have we failed to stop the #coronavirus in the US?

My first prediction on Apr 4 (toll @ 8k) was for the Easter Sunday (20k):

In my Apr 12 thread (toll @ 20k), I explained the fundamental systems concepts for the #coronavirus epidemic:

THREAD: For @politico I mapped out which countries are doing best when both their health and economic #coronavirus outcomes are considered - see here, with @beatricezjin.

#Vietnam is the clear best performer; the US ranks just 24th of 30.… #COVID
#1 Vietnam: The easy ranking leader as the biggest country with no COVID-19 deaths (95m), barely 300 cases, and economy still set to grow 2.7% in 2020.
#2 is #Taiwan: They avoided the need for a full lockdown by taking early action in January, proving that containment was possible despite proximity and other links with China. Still, with 70 percent of GDP linked to exports, Taiwan's economy is on track to shrink 4 percent.

1/3 Update of the #covid19 situation in the hospitals of #Belgium. SEIR model is fitted on data over a short period for estimating Re. This plot is for 6-7 days.
2/3 Other plots show results with longer periods. You see a longer plateau and lower values of Re. In fact the estimation is smoother and less reactive to any change, and underfits the hospitalisations (around day30)...
3/3 CONCLUSION : Fitting data is like playing golf : depending on the club you choose, a different force (Re) is applied on the ball over a different contact period. But at the end, similar ball trajectories are obtained (same trend for the fit).

In 1914, Emile de Vynck, his wife and baby arrived in North Wales. Their home in Malines, Belgium had been bombed. Lloyd George found houses for several displaced families in Gwynedd, and took the de Vynck family into his own home in Criccieth.

On 16th October 1914, Emile was interviewed by The Cambrian News:

“I left Malines when the Germans bombarded it for the fifth time. Nearly everyone fled the day after the German brutes entered the town. In terror we rushed to another village.
A kindly farmer hid us in his barn and we lay there on the straw. When we woke we escaped to Duffel and from there to Bruges where we arrived at midnight and found the town in darkness. Two ladies gave us hospitality and the next day at a very early hour we went on to Ostend.

1/7 [ANALYSIS] Last day before lifting #lockdown in #Belgium. How is the actual situation ? The situation by province seems green everywhere. What to expect the next days ? It is time for a thread about Re and scenarios.
2/7 Looking at numbers, we observe that on May 4th, we have roughly the same number of active cases than March 16th, BUT with 6 times patients in hospitals than the first day of the #lockdown. However, Re decreased by more than a factor 4 !
3/7 Re/R0 is roughly the product of three parameters : Re = T.C.tau where T is the transmissibility of the virus at each contact, C is the average number of contacts per unit of time, and tau is the duration of the disease.

In the light of the new #coronavirus cases in #Osun, let's very briefly talk about #Nigeria's (or Africa's borders). It was sometime last year that I found that probably the 4th largest concentration of Ogbomoso indigenes after Ogbomoso itself, Ibadan and Kano, is in Abidjan.
Basically, this Nigerian community has links with that part of #IvoryCoast because of trade routes that predate the British and the French, and apparently, those trade routes are still in use, which is how people made it through #Nigeria's ostensibly closed borders.
Internet service provider went down, so the thread will continue shortly.

I've seen replies that saying Ogbomoso people are also strong in #Jos and #Ghana, but for the purposes of this, I'll stick with what Mr Akin Akinbola, a much older man from Ogbomoso, told me in Paris.

It is time for one long #Coronavirus update. I have been resisting doing this as (1) I do not want to add to the hysteria & the panic & (2) I don't believe in doomsday predictions. Moreover, things have been moving so fast, who knows what's what. BUT it's time for real talk...
Overall, #Coronavirus (the outbreak of #COVID19) is REAL. The effects on your daily life from the fallout will be REAL. The impact society, economics, & politics in 2020 will be severe & REAL. None of this is Fake News. None of this should be downplayed. (2/
People who are trying to silence REAL discussion are doing a disservice to the public interest. This is a 9/11 & 2008 level event in terms of its impact on domestic & international dynamics. This thread is not about creating panic but encouraging a smarter response. (3/
