/ As expected, this podcast is excellent. *Extremely important* discussion that starts up at around 30 minutes in regarding aftermath of @siobhan_huggins’s high carb experiment still impacting her mood— something I have experienced myself in prior experiments...
/ as good scientists, we can’t say how much of this is what we ate versus the hard switch to a different metabolic pathway, etc. but what I can say, is that I’ve heard this anecdotally many, many times with those going “off diet” and trying to balance after getting back on.
/ Everyone seems to underestimate the potential *aftermath* costs (including ourselves!). Will we feel bad in just that one week we were cheating? Or did that one week result in a month or two of uncertainty, irritability, and disruption?
/ There is a special benefit of perspective to doing these experiments. Where others might assume the same catalyst that drove them to cheat what is the one that put their mood down, we already know that’s not the case. We’re the ones who chose the start in a controlled manner.
/ Which is why more than ever — I believe diet can certainly impact mood. Many experiments I’ve come out of just fine. But some have wrecked me for weeks afterward, including that one 4 day “added dextrose” experiment.
/ My point is – don’t assume you know the costs of your dietary changes — for better, and for worse.

Just never lose sight of that possibility when taking stock.
