Two comments - in two separate threads - on @vonderleyen ‘s LSE speech today. The first on terminology: Zero tariffs, zero quotas, zero dumping is a nifty shorthand for what we all want (ztzq) along with level playing field: zero dumping /1
@vonderleyen The framing connects these issues (as indeed, experts have pointed out for a while). LPF will include environment, labour & social as well as taxes - if you want, environmental dumping, social dumping, tax dumping. /2
@vonderleyen Some of these are common (references to international standards in FTAs), some less so but not problematic, tax is likely to be the most difficult area /3.

Two thoughts on POTUS threatening to commit war crimes on twitter and then defending his comments to the press (short thread) theguardian.com/world/2020/jan…
1) There was no benefit to making this specific threat. None. There is, however, a strategic downside: getting full support for your policy has become next to impossible. Lesson: conducting foreign policy on twitter outside regular channels continues to be a terrible idea.
2) The reason Trump has given will appeal to his nationalist supporters. Who really don’t care very much about such “subtleties” as allies, law or war crimes. Nationalism unchained.

On the summary exit declarations, @SteveBarclay mentioned today. It's important to understand what they are, why they are submitted and how they differ from #customs declarations.

@SteveBarclay Exit/entry declarations are slightly different than customs decs. Before import/export there is a requirement to submit a pre-arrival, pre-departure notification - info that allows authorities to control what's moving across borders from a safety and security perspective.

@SteveBarclay This information is mainly used for risk analysis and not to calculate the amount of duties due or apply other trade policy measures as in the case of customs declarations.
In principle, they are submitted by the carrier not the importer/exporter

It's not as straightforward. Yes, they could have been clearer (see my thread this morning) but this particular Q requires traders to know the basics.
The expression used in the letter "deal with customs processes" is clumsy but /1
To explain who needs only UK EORI and who needs both UK and EU one you need to first explain basic customs principles: importer/exporter, special procedures, incoterms etc /2
The UK/ EU EORI issue would be best explained by a series of scenarios but even then it really is a case by case issue. Bit easier for smaller companies but still something a trader needs to assess given their current circumstances, model, future plans etc. /3

A short thread (like when I used to work in Italy😊)
1. First of all, I was one of the very first commentators in Italy predicting a coalition between Di Maio and Salvini despite it sounded absurd then, getting many critics for that.()

So, when I say it was destined to break up, it's for a different reason.
2. Secondly, to be clear, the high speed railway TAV dispute (in some way similar to the British HS2) is just the tipping point of longstanding crisis between the two coalition parties. TAV surely sparked the ultimate crisis but Salvini and Di Maio were incompatible on much more.

EU voter friends - I wonder if you've ever wondered what it is that the UK has objected to about various things in the Brexit negotiations? If you have, this thread might be for you.
Let's start with EU citizens' rights. What the UK wanted was for EU citizens living in the UK to have the same rights as UK citizens post-Brexit. What the EU wanted was for EU citizens to have more rights than UK citizens. The UK conceded on that.
Next money. There are 3 boxes the money falls into. One (~€2-4bn) is payments for pensions & the like. The UK was always happy to pay those. A 2nd (€17-18bn) was the UK's EU membership fee out to end-2020. The UK was happy to pay that if it stayed a de facto member til then.+

The 5 Star League coalition in #Italy is now 4 months old. What should we make of it? A thread @CER_EU
Italy has a more confrontational approach to the EU picking fights on migration, the EU budget and Italy’s finances. Salvini has driven the agenda on immigration, and the League has benefitted – polling 30% vs 17% in the general election
Italy’s run in with EU has been milder then feared. Plans for a 2.4% budget deficit are a big climb-down from early plans for a 7% deficit. If both the Five Star and the League can claim victory, the optics of spat with the EU will matter more than the substance of the budget.

Hello all. Sorry for the late hour, but I wanted to give you just some quick updates on #Italy’s political deadlock. As I had hinted here in the past, despite many discarded it in the 1st place, a sort of “populist” collaboration between LEGA and M5S is more likely
I tell you why
1. Today LEGA leader Salvini and M5S leader Di Maio had a phone call. It is the 1st actual, concrete contact between the two after #Italyelection2018, after pretending to ignore each other. It was “a frank and kind call”, they said. But what did they discuss on the phone?
2. Well, according to official statements, they primarily discussed the question of the two Parliaments speakers (House of reps + Senate, it is the first stel after elections), stressing the fact that the matter is “unrelated” to the formation of a potential government
