The *lead* author of the Harpending paper Bret Stephens cites, Gregory Cochran, is a pretty interesting fellow too.

For instance, he's pretty sure that homosexuality is a literal disease transmitted by viral infection.

Cochran describes homosexuality as brain damage — but, hey, only "limited and focused" brain damage.

He says his theory is the only theory that "makes good evolutionary sense" that has ever been proposed.

Over the years, I have read a thousand pieces on "declining trust in the media" and they all (a) seem to imagine a decline that's *way* more dramatic than the actual data and (b) ignore the increase in trust post-Trump
There's more than a hint of bothsidesism in the "declining media trust" narrative. The decline is *deeply* concentrated on the right.

Past 10 years, change in media trust:

Dems: +11

Republicans: -20

Independents: -3
But "We need to find ways to get people to trust us" and "We need to find ways to get conservatives to trust us" are different things!

That slight reframing changes both (a) how big you perceive the problem to be *and* (b) the kinds of things you'd do to try to fix it.

For my @latimes story, I pulled together two numbers for a few big newspapers: how many print subscribers they had in 2002 vs. how many *digital* subscribers they have now.

And it basically explains the crisis in local news...

(Well, technically, the 2002 number includes both subscribers and single-copy sales at newsstands. Newsstands used to be a thing, back in the day. You'd buy little pieces of paper covered in news there.)
So here are the circulation numbers for 2002. The @nytimes is at the top. But there are a bunch of newspapers not *that* far behind it, including healthy readership in all the large cities you'd expect.

2. Evernote, especially Evernote web clipper (browser plug-in). Its multimedia limitations frustrate me but it is super-useful being able to take notes and save web pages on all my devices and have it auto-sync to the cloud where it is searchable.

3. THE BRAIN

This software is extremely useful for researchers, and you can start using it for free. The full version costs about $300 a year, well worth it. I use version 8, they're up to 10 but I'm used to the old UI, slow to upgrade.

When Rick Scott became Governor in January of 2010, he began a campaign to privatize 30 South Florida prisons and hired Edwin Buss as the Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections.
“It was one of the most aggressive private prison expansions in the history of the United states, maybe the most aggressive,” Edwin Buss said. While governor, Rick Scott has been through 5 Secretaries of the Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC).
Rick Scott also wanted to privatize the health care services of inmates. He hired Elizabeth Gondles to oversee it, but she had to resign over a conflict of interest: her husband was married to the head of the only organization that accredits prison medical services in the nation.
