Here’s a thread on why I think it is vital that @DawnButlerBrent is on the ballot for Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, and why she is my strong preference to take on that role:
Values: In an era when far too many MPs stand for nothing but their own career prospects, Dawn is a conviction politician. She has fought for survivors of domestic violence, refugees facing persecution, workers asking for basic human rights and true equality & dignity for *all*.
Pioneer: Dawn Butler is only the third black female MP in our history. In 2009, she became the first black woman to speak from the despatch box in the House of Commons. She is the working-class daughter of Jamaican immigrant parents who continues to break barriers & make history.
Resilience: Dawn has had to face all sorts of abuse & prejudice throughout her political career. From fellow MPs assuming she was a cleaner who was using their lift, to vile racist abuse online. In spite of this, she has dealt with it all with incredible patience and resilience.
Charisma: Dawn is a formidable public speaker and communicator. Perhaps more than any other candidate for Labour leader or deputy, her ability to excite and inspire is vital. Labour failed in communicating its vision to the public during the election. Butler can help address that
Youth: In spite of the devastating election result, one way in which Labour have succeeded is energising the youth vote. Butler has been fundamental to that. From Brown to Corbyn, she has advised and coached on communicating effectively with younger voters and revitalising PMQs.
Passion: Yes the Tories are in power and yes they have a huge majority in parliament, but that doesn’t mean you stop fighting. Dawn has the guts, passion & fearlessness to hold them to account and fight them every step of the way. Her arguments are always articulate & impassioned
Progress: Dawn is a brilliant, talented, exciting, qualified black female MP who ready & willing to stand for deputy leader of the Labour Party. If she doesn’t make it onto the ballot for a supposedly progressive and modern party - on absolute merit - what the fuck is going on?
Sound: I’ve met Dawn and she’s proper sound. Switched on, witty, intelligent, genuine, determined, warm - and most importantly - she properly gives a shit about making this country a better, happier, more equal place to live. #DawnOnTheBallot
