/ Here’s a short summary of the problematic responses @realDonaldTrump gave to @IngrahamAngle in the interview last night:
The President makes the claim that Japan isn’t opening plants in the US because there’s a “labor shortage”. See the video below:
/ Toyota didn’t move its plants to Mexico because there was a “labor shortage” in the US. It did it because the cost of labor & tariffs were much more less in Mexico. Mexico is also a huge consumer of Toyota products, so it made sense for them to open a plant there.
/ The President should have just said what the Koch brothers & the CATO types have been saying: “we need to increase the labor supply & create a surplus of workers so labor costs will go down.” Don’t hide behind the lie that there’s a labor shortage. There isn’t:
/ Trump states that he wants “smart people to stay in the country”. He defines “smart” as: “graduate number 1 from Harvard”. @IngrahamAngle is correct, that is very small number, but Trump claims “it’s a lot”. The issue is how the term gets thrown around to bring cheaper labor.
/ As we’ve seen with the H-1B visa program, the media, Business Roundtable, & our own politicians claim these are “high-skilled”, the “best & brightest”. Reality: 75% of H-1Bs go to Indian nationals doing entry level IT work at entry level wages. Trump’s son thinks H-1B are:
/ Trump ran on a Buy American Hire American campaign. Here, he’s arguing that there’s a “shortage” of skilled Americans, & pushing the Business Roundtable/CATO talking points that MORE foreign workers need to be imported. Lastly, no Wall has been built as he claims here.
