What was the media’s role in spreading fear about Haredim on the cusp of the escalation in violence against them? This 2017 New York Times article is a good place to start asking such questions: nytimes.com/2017/08/02/nyr…
Look at this lede! To add to the normal ppl moving into Jersey City, there’s ‘an unexpected flavor.’ Are you kidding me?
Residents aren’t warned about the ‘bankers, artists and college graduates.’ But the African Americans in town are specifically warned about the Jews.

Who’s more likely to cause gentrification—Hasidic students w/families or Wall Streeters?
The NYT in its own words: “These families are pioneers in a demographic and religious shift that is reshaping communities throughout the region...

has provoked tensions with long-established residents, as the ultra-Orthodox seek to establish a larger footprint”
Then NYT warns the Jews are MAGA footsoldiers: “They have become a more muscular political and social force and have turned the generally liberal profile of the area’s Jews more observant and conservative. Lakewood Township, near the Jersey Shore, voted for Donald J. Trump”
More NYT in its own words: “Underlying the objections of many municipalities is an often unspoken worry that ultra-Orthodox Jews will transform the character of their communities.”
So is the NYT right about the Jewish newcomers? What happens when they ask an actual resident:

“Eddie Sumpter, 34, a black neighbor around the corner who was able to buy a bigger house by selling his previous home to a Hasidic family, said he welcomed the newcomers.”

Ah.
NYT has been telling black people for years to fear Jews. Those who actually interacted with their new neighbors knew NYT was lying. But that won’t be everybody, of course. Eventually the NYT was bound to get the reaction it wanted.
