With a 9th grader on our 'Neuroscience and cognition' course. SHE- Can you remove the biology and teach only the psychology part? ME- What do you think biology is? Someone's brain was damaged and he could only recognize faces, not objects. Would you like to understand why? 1/n
SHE- Wow! Yes! ME- Well, that's biology.. I don't know what you have in mind when you say biology. | Can we avoid killing interest in a subject too early by making it lifeless? Can we help learners understand that the division of knowledge into subjects is only for convenience?

2) In 1986, Lake Nyos in Cameroon erupted killing 1800 people + 3500 livestock in a 19 km radius. Bodies were burnt; survivors had eye lesions, neurological problems, paralysis of lower limbs. Similar events at nearby Lake Monoun on a smaller scale in 1984
3) Eyewitnesses of Lake Nyos disaster reported- very hard rain that stopped at 930 PM; rumbling sound & smell like gunpowder + rotten eggs; people ran around and dropped dead; many lost consciousness for 6-16 hours

3/ Never interact with multiple prospects at the same time. You cannot/ should not compare people. If one doesn't work out, wait a while and meet the next person. Your attitude of commitment to one person (not comparing) changes the other person and you

In a surprising twist in a recent Twitter conversation, @KordingLab had to admit (including to himself) that a particular #neuroscience paper was making invalid causal statements. Said he'd been blinded to it b/c so many he reads r like that. 1/
@KordingLab Instead of using the incident 2 educate on the impotence of correlation-fishing to indicate causal relationships, as he tried 2 do in his famous "microprocessor" paper, + Mehler and Kording (2018) + his 2017 Waterloo Brain Day lecture, he blocked me + deleted the tweets. 2/
@KordingLab In other words, as with other types of "woke" signalling, @KordingLab's woke signalling about correlational improprieties was just a cover for business as usual - his own and others. Like @russpoldrack, he gets to have it both ways.

Yesterday a major magazine asked me for a previously unpublished recipe with “5 spins” on it and a blurb and when I asked what they paid, they said they didn’t pay for “editorial tips.” Recipe development isn’t a “tip.” 1/2
The worst part is all I could think is that “someone will think they need to do this to get their name out there.” Don’t. Don’t work for free. Don’t work for exposure. Dont let anyone convince you that your work isn’t work. Don’t support publications that think you should. 2/2

La soirée se déroule en deux parties : diffusion du documentaire (en partie coupé pour raisons de timing) "L'homme a mangé la Terre", sur la révolution industrielle. Documentaire Arte avec pleins d'images tristes, et des fusées qui décollent, symbole de l'hubris humain. 2/n
Documentaire plutôt sympathique, quoique très orienté #CéléLobbies (avec un accent assez malsain sur la famille Rockefeller). Il y a une ambiance un peu complotiste qui me chipote. Tout est de la faute des industriels qui obligent le peuple à consommer. 3/n

For those of you who don't know, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) identifies correlations between variations in segments of DNA and a phenotype. #psychology
Lee: Once we know that a trait is heritable, it seems reasonable to identify which segments of DNA are associated with a phenotype. #psychology #ISIR2019
Lee: In 2016, Okbay et al. published a GWAS of 293,723 for years of education. Lee et al. (2018) followed up with a sample size of 1.1 million. They found 1,271 SNPs (i.e., DNA variants) that are correlated with educational attainment.
