The first time that I appeared on the set of PBS @NewsHour I was nervous.

I was interviewed at a desk off to the side — behind Jim Lehrer’s anchor desk — by a PBS correspondent. There was no reason for Lehrer even to acknowledge me. He was in the midst of a show, after all.
But when I finished and was walking off the set, Lehrer turned around, got my attention and gave me a sly thumbs up. My anxiety about the appearance melted away (rightly or not!).
When someone in a position of authority or power commits a small act of grace, it can have a big effect. That’s my abiding memory of Jim Lehrer, and I’ll always be grateful for it.
He was a great journalist. My condolences to his colleagues, friends and friends. nytimes.com/2020/01/23/bus…
