Gospel: Today we read of one of the most often ignored incidents in Jesus's life. In Mk 3:20, Jesus's own family sets out from Nazareth to Capernaum to "restrain him," because people said he was "out of his mind." When "his mother and brothers" reach Capernaum, Jesus is told...
..that they are "outside" waiting to see him. (Presumably he is inside either his or Peter's house.) Hearing this, Jesus replies, "Who are my mother and brothers?" "Whoever does the will of God" (Mk 3:33). So Jesus's family wanted to "restrain" him, because they had been told...
...and apparently believed (or else why would they come to Capernaum?) that he was "out of his mind." But in response, Jesus, who loves his family, underlines his connection with the Father. It shows first that sometime even those closest to Jesus misunderstood him. And second...
...as Daniel J. Harrington, SJ, once explained this passage to me, "For Jesus, ties to the Father are more important than ties to his family." It's a beautiful reading that has much to say about families, inevitable misunderstandings that occur among loved ones, and priorities.
