4- So you can start your career from campus and you should! We have been learning about SOFT SKILLS. We have looked at Leadership and Communication skills. Today, we will focus on Critical Thinking.

5- You may have heard about a skill called Critical Thinking and be wondering what it means. There are many definitions, but it is not part of my job to give you another textbook to study this night...

6- ...so I will not give you a definition, but an explanation. Critical thinking is simply when you question what everyone accepts as correct. You have been hearing many things from your lecturers since your day one in school.

7- But when you begin to question (in your mind) what is written in the textbooks and what your lecturers are saying, you are thinking critically.

8- It is a skill that is needed in all profession. Especially with the curriculum that exists in most schools today, you would need to have critical thinking to be able to break from the norm and enter into what is really needed.

9- Learning Center describes it as a kind of thinking that seeks to explore questions about existing knowledge for issues which are not clearly defined and for which there are no clear-cut answers.

10- When you begin to ask questions like 'why is this like this?', 'Is this still relevant today?', 'Is this correct?', 'Can we make this better?', 'Is there a better/easier way to do this?', you are thinking critically.

11- Now, as a Nigerian student, you will agree with me that you have a lot of questions to ask. Unfortunately, the current educational system does not support the development of this skill.

12- Lecturers around here do not take it kindly when you ask a critical question. I once pointed out an error to a Prof. in class and he shunned me only for him to realize that I was right minutes later.

13- Critical thinking helps you to develop new ways of doing things. It leads to creativity, inventions and innovations. This is needed in building a viable personal brand and every career needs you to be able to think outside the box.

14- To develop this skill, begin to practice the critical questions. Don't run away from it. It is a skill that can be developed. Practice it with your classmates, roommates and when you think it is appropriate and safe, with your lecturers.

15- Good leaders like and encourage critical thinking because it makes the organization dynamic in it workings. If you start early, it could be the reason why you will be singled out in an interview.
