I’m STILL working on a thread in response to the IG report. No joke. Where do people find the time?

Until then...I have a couple quick comments on a previous thread in light of my reading of the IG report.
2\

This thread on the NeoCon/realist civil war within the GOP held up surprisingly well.

3\

In particular, quotes in the IG report attributed to Carter Page place him squarely within the Realist camp.
4\

Page states that he aspires to model himself after George Kennan.
5\

No other person has been as closely associated with the Realist school of American foreign policy than Kennan.

6\

And these quotes from Papadopoulos bragging about his connections with Israelis bolster his neoconservative bona fides.
7\

Almost reads like parody.

If the FBI believed PapaD was coached on his comments about Russia, then why didn’t he get better coaching on how not sound like an Israeli asset?
8\

Stefan Halper, however, still remains an enigma. There have been several revelations since I wrote the original thread that paint him in more questionable light.
9\

For instance: in an appearance on British radio, Halper compares the scandal engulfing the Trump administration to Watergate.

10\

Within the IG report itself, Halper doesn’t come off particularly villainous. He gathers evidence that is actually exculpatory and the FBI/DOJ decides not to include it in the FISA applications.
11\

I must say that the relationship between Halper and Page is part of the report I find most fascinating.
12\

I theorized in the earlier thread that it was possible that Halper and Page were working together. As it turns out, the report confirms that Page was a CIA asset previously. And it was already well-known that Halper worked for the Agency for 30 years.
13\

However, the report doesn’t lead me to believe that Halper and Page were working together as part of an investigation.

Page has always struck me as a lonely figure. His policy positions on Russia have place him outside of the conventional foreign policy establishment.
14\

The sense I get from the IG report is that he genuinely saw Halper as a potential ally, dare I say "friend."

Page encouraged Halper to write op-eds for the Trump campaign and even sought Halper’s advice on “damage control.”
15\

This tweet also suggests Page was sincere in his relationship with Halper.
16\

Page has always been hesitant about criticizing Halper.

Since the release of the IG report, he has raised some questions about Halper’s intentions.

17\

I wouldn’t exactly call that a seering condemnation of Halper.

Perhaps because Page as been an informant himself, he’s apt to give another informant the benefit of the doubt.
18\

Mostly, Page says he doesn’t know much.

And if Page doesn’t know much, then most of us do not know much either. Just saying.
19\

Anyway, there will be plenty more about Halper and his role and possible motivation in my thread on the IG report.

When that is finished...some day.
