#Thread There may have been sabotage last week, but a look at the power utilities report to Nersa paints Eskom on the brink of collapse. Eskom's own report describes a litany of severe faults with the new power stations' most important components...
So problem one is the technology Medupi was built with which is very modern technology... Way mismatched to the low grade coal quality in the ground at Lephalale. The Eskom report details poor coal is damaging every part of Kusile and Medupi.
Then Eskom admits that design and technical requirements are not met. The Mills to pulverise coals don't meet technical specs. The boilers' design means they overheat. Coal damages them. The filter plant to filter fumes is damaged by coal & excess ash builld up & trips often.
Even the computer control hardware system doesn't work properly at either plant. And Eskom says to Nersa "corrective maintenance" doesn't work. This is 2019. Alstom was having problems fixing software in 2013. Fired later. 6 yrs later there are still issues with control system.
So mills to crush coal, boilers to burn it, filters for smoke and the dust plant to clear away left over ash all have significant faults and coal damage. This is while only 4 of the 12 units at Medupi and Kusile are even online.
The Medupi and Kusile plants online are only working at half capacity according to Eskom's own report because of all the trips, design faults, leaks and danage from corrosive low grade coal. Then we get the rest of Eskom fleet. It's too old.
More than half of all power stations are above 37 years and 40 is the end of life limit. Eskom says 12 boilers at 5 power stations are shut down due to excessive age etc. 10 need significant reinvestment in next 4 years. The stations are too old to keep going or almost too old.
And the new stations Medupi and Kusile are far from finished... And the parts don't work well.

Read Eskom's own report and ask yourself how will the lights stay on?
Building Medupi and Kusile were started in 2007 and 2008. Paul'o Flaherty Eskom chief of finance in 2012 told parliament a funding plan was only drawn up for builds in 2010.
So building the 3rd and 4th largest power stations in the WORLD were started without a proper £ plan.🤔
Here is a list of issues Eskom told Nersa about. They called them major design and technical issues at Medupi and Kusile
Look how many times the two units at Medupi have tripped. Just this year. Ted Blom says the station is running at less than 20 % capacity. Ps all 6 units were supposed to be running by 2015.
