/ At times, I feel like Nigerian leaders, even since 1966, have intentionally refused to implement key solutions to tackling Nigeria's chronic problems. Rather, they choose to create more problems for the country, to satisfy their personal interests and aggrandizements.
/ So, 5years after a botched creation of additional polling units across Nigeria, @inecnigeria, Nigeria's apex electoral umpire is up again in its sleeves, to creating more problems, than strengthening Nigeria's ELECTORAL PROCESSES?
/ According to @inecnigeria boss, Professor Mahmud Yakubu, who disclosed a plan to create additional polling units across Nigeria, “at the moment we have 119,973 polling units, we also have over 57,000 voting points making a total of over 180,000 polling units & voting points."
/ Yakubu gave this hint, in Abuja, when he received Geographic Information System (GIS) support equipment donated by the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES).
/ Dear @inecnigeria chairman, at this point, creating additional PUs is least of Nigeria's priorities. In August 2014 when INEC proposed additional 30,027 PUs- 21,615 in the North; 8,412 in the South, there was DISTRUST, forcing INEC to jettison the plan. Yakubu has come again.
/ During the last Presidential and National Assembly elections on February 23, 2019, the Inspector General of @PoliceNG, Mohammed Adamu ordered the  restriction of vehicular movement from 6am – 6pm, to curtail electoral malfeasances and violence.
/ Adamu deployed 55 Commissioners of Police and other Deputy Commissioners of Police to man each of the 109 senatorial zones in the country. It was addition to the substantive Command Commissioners of Police in the 36 states of the federation and Abuja.
/ He deployed AIGs to coordinate CPs in all the states. Yet, a post mortem analysis of the 2019 general elections documented how the collation process of the election results by INEC was opaque, chaotic, vulnerable to manipulation and, in some locations, violently disrupted.
/ @inecnigeria should fix the plagues of 2019- Its missteps & misconduct; deliberate denial of access to observers and media; logistical shortfalls; intentional disruption by politicians, political thugs and party agents; and intimidation of collation staff by security agents.
/ Ahead of 2023, @inecnigeria should be worried about regaining the confidence of millions of Nigerians in the electoral processes, through building a STRONG, INDEPENDENT, TECH-INCLINED agency, not disturbing the peace of Nigerians with a wishy-washy additional PUs.
/ END OF THREAD- An @inecnigeria that can't effectively conduct a FREE, FAIR, TRANSPARENT & PEACEFUL election across 180,000 polling units & voting points, can't do NADA with more Polling Units and Voting Points. A word is enough for the wise.
