Here’s something I’ve been musing about this week. I saw some protein bars at the gym - & I wondered what protein they were actually made of. The ingredients were written in a tiny font but, as well as “milk protein”* I found: “collagen hydrolysate”. Sounds kinda sciencey & cool!
(* milk protein aka whey - which is now very popular, since cheese manufacturers realised they could sell their waste to body builders)
But collagen hydrolysate sounds great, doesn’t it! Where does that collagen come from? I wondered. Boiled-up animal skin and bones, I presumed. I checked it out, and yes, it is just processed gelatine.
So - you can get birthday cake flavoured, chocolate brownie flavoured, cookies and cream flavoured bars of boiled-up-bones and skin! Mmmmmm delicious!
I’m planning on making brunch with some less heavily processed (and may I say, much less expensive) animal protein. (And yes, I know it came out of a chicken’s bum, but somehow I still find that more palatable than boiled cow hides from the abbatoir!)
