Wetherspoon have said they're only going to use Fairtrade sugar, which is produced by Tate & Lyle. But as always seems to be the case, there's a lot more to the story than meets the eye... T&L's competitor grows sugar in Norfolk. T&L does so overseas.

T&L are super pro Brexit because they saw an opportunity to bypass the EU's tariffs on the sugar T&L imports. (Assuming the UK plays ball and sets a lower tariff or no tariff on cane sugar). In doing so they're taking trade away from UK-based beet farmers.

So "Fairtrade" sounds good... until you know the details. After that, in this particular case, it's 🤮

Here's more on the background to T&L's pro-Brexit stance. Entirely self-serving, of course. All they want to do is get their foreign sugar into the UK cheaply, domestic producers be damned.
