A highly revealing comment, not least for showing the complete refusal of Brexiters to take any responsibility whatsoever for what they have done. The current mess is, of course, everyone *else's* fault. But more specifically 1/5
Having told us for decades that the EU was a malign body, they now claim that their 'plan' was entirely dependent on EU goodwill; and having claimed that the UK 'held all the cards' they now talk of 'EU bullying' as if it were the stronger party. 2/5
It neglects the fact that, far from sabotage, May's government has sought to implement to the letter the hard Brexiters' agenda (no SM/CU) and that the main opposition to her deal comes from ERG Brexiters rather than remainers (and 'Jezza' is certainly not one of those). 3/5

Many fear a 2nd Ref wd be bitter and divisive e.g. @TiceRichard (Leave means Leave) "It would be brutal, it would be ugly". A very naïve thought: how about both sides conducting polite, rational & evidence based campaigns? Maybe we can be better than last time? 1/3
My slight hope that this could be so is fed by the completely unrelated, but hilarious, thread on 'petty crimes in London', which shows Brits to be much nicer people than Brexit makes us seem: 2/3

The Michael Howard interview on @BBCr4today was littered with other problems, including: a) imagining 'no deal' as, in fact, an ad hoc deal that EU could agree to without any of the features that they need from *any* deal. 1/4
b) Imagining unilateral abandonment of *import* checks - which would anyway create massive risk of smuggling and contaminated/ unsafe products - to be a solution to queues caused by checks on *exports*. 2/4
c) Imagining that the Barnier 'offer' of a Canada-style deal would obviate need for the NI backstop to which Howard objects (indeed Howard didn't mention NI at all). 3/4

When I started my first tenure track position, I was handed the key to my office and basically told to "go get tenure". Fortunately, I had great advisors who helped me figure out how to do that. I'd like to share some of that advice. 1/ @UFCISE @uf_fics
This advice is heavily biased towards positions in Computer Science at R1 universities. There's likely lots of survivorship bias, which means that some of this advice is bad for you. That said, I hope that there are a few things in here that are useful to everyone. 2/
1) Define what success is for you, then tell everyone else. Demand on that being how you are evaluated. I try to focus on impact. That could be a top quality publication, or kicking off a start-up. Folks in your department need to know why what you've done has value. 3/

I'm NOT recommending it, but did you know that Gandhi published his own translation of the Bhagavad Gita? Well, I do STRONGLY recommend it, but you don't need it for the moment. Just one point about it is needed.
Oh, my favorite Gita translator is Barbara Stoler Miller. She's a Minford class translator, one of the greatest in the English language.

“Facebook still has questions to answer” link to unprecedented global committee hearing starting shortly. Facebook sent its lobbyist. We know questions will be precise at this point but we don’t know whether Facebook will come to answer. ICO certainly will. I’ll thread here.
Long line to get in. People want answers. Press conference, which will happen in between Facebook lobbyist’s evidence and ICO Commissioner who produced damning report on Facebook, was already overbooked yesterday.
Funny. I sure hope no one thinks that’s what this is really about. There is a long list of tough unanswered questions already. Some of those docs may simply add context to FB thinking at the time GSR/SCL was given grace period of a year.
