It’s interesting to watch Canadians abandon their beliefs and values when they are inconvenienced. It never fails to disappoint me when it happens.
With little interest in determining what is so significant that FN people would disrupt the economy to gain Canadian’s attention, many write this off as “illegal protesting.” As if there is such a thing.
Blockades are illegal.

Protesting is not.

It’s a civil liberty enshrined in and protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Yes, we are inconvenienced.

Yes, the economy is being impacted.
But rather than examine what all the fuss is about (generally indigenous people don’t protest for minor issues in such a coordinated national scope), many are just demanding the protests be stopped so they can go back to ignoring indigenous issues. Carry on with their own lives.
Whether we agree with the methods being used to gain attention or not, the fact remains that FN people are demonstrating national resistance to policy they feel is unlawful.

It behooves us to examine details of the situation to ascertain the reason for such drastic measures.
If we as Canadians spent half as much effort attempting to understand what is being communicated, rather than trying to rationalize and justify reasons to shut down the protests, this may not have ever reached the stage of extended national economic disruption.
Food for thought: maybe there is something very wrong behind all the protests.

My research tells me there is something very wrong happening.

I’ve written several other threads on twitter explaining the situation and who is behind this situation, which I will attach below.

I’m hardly the only one who follows indigenous politics, so many others have written extensively about this situation as well. Look them up please.
Many FN may not be articulating the issues at stake as clearly as required for mass communication. And there are several attempting to co-opt this protest. And a full fledged disinformation campaign in full progress to undermine the FN narrative.
But with some effort, most Canadians are capable of discerning the main issue is about perceived section 35 treaty rights violations.

Not stopping a pipeline.

Not climate change.
And perhaps the next time Canadians want to disparage consumers of information, who happen to be conservative supporters, for being so easily duped and intolerably gullible to populist rhetoric, they’ll remember this incident & reflect on its teachings.
We are all susceptible to disinformation and propaganda campaigns and primarily focussed on our own self interest.

It requires EFFORT to look beyond our own self interest to understand other’s suffering and pleas for help. And significant effort to actually provide that help.
As many Canadians are demonstrating clearly during this crisis in our nation.

Look in the mirror. It is reconciliation staring at you right in the face.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

Empathy requires effort to understand each other’s circumstances.
