“No, we can’t” is a bold strategy, cotton.
Getting pretty excited about watching the unstoppable momentum of an unbeatable campaign with the slogan

WHAT YOU WANT ISN'T REALISTIC
Maybe leadership is not the work of getting hopeful people to accept the way things are.

Maybe leadership is the work of pointing people toward something that is not actually possible right now, but which is very much needed, and inspiring them to believe it's possible.
I'm no paid pundit but my observation is that successful leaders have a vision, and successful candidates are usually the ones able to plug into the unique energy created when a group of people begin to believe in an idea of something new.

I'm probably nuts here. Pay no mind.
The thing about realism is, pretty much anything is unrealistic, if you've decided not to even try.

On the other hand, think of all the things that used to be 'unrealistic.'

Sufferage
Abolition
The Civil Rights Act
Marriage equality
The American Disabilities Act
The comments flooding my mentions are making me feel very tired.

We used to be a country that went to the moon not because it was easy, but because it was hard.

When did so many of us decide the way it is can't change?
I wish to spend the next 4 years trying to accomplish something better.

Just like some idiot who once said "Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not."

Remember that one?

By the way, those of you who are using this as an opportunity to pile onto Bernie Sanders are telling on yourselves.

I'm talking about Biden.

And there's someone else in the race I still prefer and always have. Don't want Bernie? Joe isn't the only choice.
The fact that people who don't want Bernie Sanders who won't even consider Elizabeth Warren as an option are strongly suggesting to me their actual problem isn't Bernie Sanders.
The confidence some of you have that Joe Biden will obviously win by running his "settle down everybody and let's all stay realistic about our expectations here" message, is extraordinary.

I've never seen such a thing win. Not once.

Where does this confidence come from?
Tell me Warren is "too liberal" and Sanders is unacceptable; I'll simply point out that this thread is about what leadership is, and what it isn't, what I've seen work and what I've seen never work.

If your 1st priority is defeating Trump, Biden's the worst choice remaining.
I've seen elections go to the farthest possible right, who somehow managed to not alienate the middle.

I've seen it go to a progressive campaign running on universal healthcare, who somehow managed to not alienate the middle.

But they both communicated a vision.

Vision wins.
I'll finish with an exercise. Think of good things in your life. Your city. The roads and cars and planes and trains that take you where you need to go. The weekend. The 8 hour workday. The vote.

All of them were unrealistic once. All of them were some fool's unrealistic dream.
Unrealistic things happen through vision.

Vision moves people.

Vision wins.

It always does.
