Here's a Biden supporter, or an account claiming to be one, arguing that Biden's homophobic comments makes Biden more electable. I would file this comment under homophobic harrassment. But here's the thing: this comment won't lead me to vote for Trump if Biden is the Dem nominee.
Why? Because I have no idea who is behind the account. Because a nasty comment from someone claiming to be a "supporter" of any given candidate should not matter when I decide who I want to be my president. You know what should matter? The candidate's track record and positions.
I do not understand why adults, particularly those claiming to care deeply about policy, are stating that their vote will be swayed by their online interactions with a candidate's alleged supporters. What!?
There's a wealth of discourse & research on how humans become nasty to one another online. Online trolling and bullying did not start with any campaign in 2016 or 2020. There's been a ton of news on the Russian government creating fake accounts to interfere with our elections.
Maybe I'm just a millennial who came of age online and grew accustomed to people, including friends & family, arguing online. Maybe I'm just a gay Latino man who represents an immigrant and working class district and I don't have the luxury of basing my vote on "civility."
But I cannot for the life of me understand how otherwise brilliant people would publicly state that the most important decision they'll make as a U.S. citizen will be swayed by their interactions with anonymous online accounts, some of which are in fact foreign agents. Insane.
As a gay and Latino man who represents an immigrant and working class I don't have the privilege to base my decision on perceptions of civility. I have to base my decision on who will best help me and my community secure freedom and prosperity. I believe that is Bernie Sanders.
Must be nice to be able to walk into a voting booth and cast your vote based upon how you feel about anonymous online trolls. I can't fathom what it means to have that type of privilege and security, but I hope one day "online civility" can be every American's number one concern.
