NEGROES AGAIN BARRED FROM G.O.P. CONVENTION

Seventh District Ruled Against Black Delegates From Charlottesville.

[Special to The Times-Dispatch]

WINCHESTER, VA., July 23.-The "brother in black" again has been given to understand ...
... that he no longer is wanted at conventions of the Republican party in Virginia, in spite of his longing to be at home with the G.O.P. fold."
The Daily Progress,

November 1, 1921

(Certain Republican leaders publish a letter protesting the appointment of African-American electoral judges.)

Letter dated October 30, 1921:

"Dear Sir: It has been brought to the attention of the Republican Committee that those named
Republican judges of election in the different precincts or wards of the City of Charlottesville are not white Republicans. In fact, we do not know whether the judges of election here alluded to will vote the Democratic or Republican ticket.
Neither do we understand why you should have appointed colored men as judges purporting to be Republicans, especially as this was done by you without authorization from the Republican Committee. If you consulted anyone except the Committee, of which I am Secretary, you acted
... on your own authority in the matter and not representative of the sentiment of the Republican party, and you and your associates alone are responsible for the appointment of these men. The Republican Committee is not responsible, as there are other men that it desired
... to have appointed as judges. Is it fair to put those who vote the Republican ticket in this absolutely false light?
The "Lily White" Movement in Virginia: A Republican Party response to being labled "the Party of the Negro"

Despite continual African-American support, the Republican party increased efforts to recover white votes through a "lily white" movement.

Letter from J.H. Rives (Republican Candidate for Mayor of Charlottesville) to J. Snowden Wood (Republican County Chairman)

Rives [warns] Wood to avoid African American participation in Republican Party activities.

University of Virginia, July 13th, 1896
Dear Sir,

“To push the colored man forward when the Democratic party is disrupted and so many leaders and many of the rank and file ARE COMING OVER TO US is just what the Democrats of this county wish you to do,
... that they may call us the 'Nigger Party,' and thus arouse prejudice".

"In "WILL IT WORK," published August 13, 1900, The Daily Progress questioned the feasibility and fairness of excluding African Americans from the Republican Party."

“He has physically kicked Negroes even out of his own Republican party convention and declared himself opposed to Negro suffrage - it is a blow so serious and fatal that we have not ceased to gasp at it.”
