A rock paper scissors automaton: green with at least 3 blue neighbours becomes blue, likewise blue becomes red, red becomes green. Initialized randomly. The edges wrap around at the top/bottom and left/right. 1/
The same, but a transition requires at least 4 neighbours. The dynamics are completely different 2/
Here it is with a fourth colour, with a neighbour threshold of 3 for a transition 3/
And four colours with a neighbour threshold of 2 4/
And eight colours with a neighbour threshold of 2. I like this one because of the distinct blocks with up/down/left/right movement 5/

To count an animal population if you can't catch them all: capture some, mark them, release, and capture again. The ratio of new vs already seen tells you something about the total number. Shown here is iterated mark-and-recapture with a Bayesian updates to belief about pop size
The left side shows a crude simulation of animals moving around, which are periodically captured. Colour indicates number of times captured. Right side is a distribution describing belief over the population size.
It's funny that the first 'measurement' is much less informative than subsequent ones: it just tells you that the population is at least as large as the number of animals you've captured.

Particle filters are general algorithms for inferring the state of a system with noisy dynamics and noisy measurements. Here's an example with a robot in a circular room. Red=true robot, blue=guesses, occasional red line=noisy range sensor measurement. Details in thread 1/
A particle filter (PF) does the same job as a Kalman filter (KF). Generally: you have a system in an unknown state, evolving over time according to some known dynamics + noise, and you occasionally get noisy sensor data. The task is to infer the current state 2/
In a KF your current uncertainty of the system is represented by a Gaussian, the dynamics are linear + Gaussian noise, and measurements have Gaussian noise. All those assumptions together mean that at any time your uncertainty is captured by a MV Gaussian 3/

So in @sirajraval's livestream yesterday he mentioned his 'recent neural qubit paper'. I've found that huge chunks of it are plagiarised from a paper by Nathan Killoran, Seth Lloyd, and co-authors. E.g., in the attached images, red is Siraj, green is original
@sirajraval He cites Killoran et al. in the abstract only, and says he presents a model "similar to" it, but the shown parts are almost word for word the same, and the figure, table, and captions are also lifted

I have a new favourite troupe and it's fake-married-for-crimes. Sadly, I don't have time to start a new WIP so here's me brainstorming.
So maybe the war between Talon and Overwatch ends and a new peace begins. Jack and Gabe are revealed in the aftermath and the UN find out.

With Jack, the UN are willing to "let bygones be bygones" because of his political history.
But with Gabe, they are less forgiving. Even though Gabe acted as a double agent inside Talon, the UN felt that he should still answer for his actions as Reaper.

Which finds Jack and the old Overwatch guard (except Gabe) in a meeting with the UN.

The King of Fighters series is an old favorite of mine. I'm terrible at fighting games, though. What's the solution? Why, a King of Fighters visual novel, of course! Buckle up, team—This is going to be a pseudo-Let's Play for a hidden gem called the King of Fighters Kyo, for PS1.
Let's get into some background first. This game was one of several PS1 titles developed by Yumekobo as SNK spinoff games. Their other notable PS1 title was Athena: Awakening from the Ordinary Life, a 3D game with prerendered BGs, survival horror mechanics, & psychic powers.
I could do a whole other thread on this game, which I've played extensively, but that's a thread for another day. In any case, Yumekobo was part of SNK and got dissolved when SNK went bankrupt around 2000-ish.
