PIs. ask yourself and your lab some important questions today.
1. If someone can do their job at home (or part of their job), are you letting them do it?
2. Did you freeze down aliquots of your ongoing cell culture experiments in case you have to stop ongoing experiments?
3. Is your animal colony tightly maintained, and can a "skeleton" crew of people from the lab take turns maintaining it if needed?
4. If anyone in your group has child-care responsibilities due to school closures etc->is it clear they should go home immediately?
5. Is everyone in your group prepared to do work (writing, data analysis, zoom meetings) from home if needed? Do they have laptops, a hard drive with data, and/or access to your lab server wherever they are?
I am sure there are more things we should all do, please add your plans/ideas to the list!
My primary laptop crashed last week, and I had a backup which I immediately had IT set up. I keep a spare laptop at all times in case of situations like this (normally when I am about to travel and I have a laptop issue, but same idea now...)
My lab and I have agreed that all animal studies, for now, will continue but we are prepared to stop IMMEDIATELY if needed. Priorities are human safety>animal safety>>>>>>experiments we can redo later
