1 like = 1 ridiculous/scummy/whatever moment from Matt Southall’s eleven week Chairmanship of #cafc
Matt Southall becomes #cafc Chairman following ESI’s ‘purchase’ of the club at the start of January. Southall preaches sustainability and being financially prudent. Nothing wrong with that, right? 
Whilst Southall makes all these comments about the club being sensible financially, he decides to give himself around £100k in cosultancy fees, lease a Range Rover for a similar price and spend £12.5k a month (two year lease) on a flat using the club’s credit card.
All the while Southall is splurging on the club’s credit card, he makes claims of refusing to sign players because they wanted an extra £1000 a week (less than a 1/3rd of the cost of his Tower Bridge flat).
To make this lavish spending for himself even worse, this happened while Charlton were placed under a registration embargo as proof and source of funds had yet to be submitted to the EFL.
Charlton were unable to raise their wage bill for players, so were effectively unable to sign someone. So, Southall decided to hype signing Ivan Toney on SSN and meet with Peterborough’s Chairman on the basis of signing Marcus Maddison. 🤷🏻♂️
For some reason, Charlton couldn’t agree terms with Marcus Maddison 🤔
Despite basically being unable to sign any players of note, Southall heads into Deadline Day hyping up the #cafc fanbase on Twitter.
This included a picture of an incredibly village spread
And mention of a ‘super deal phone’
Obviously, Southall couldn’t use the ‘super deal phone’. With #cafc in a relegation battle and having had their best player recalled by Chelsea, the club’s Deadline Day signings were Aiden McGeady, Matt Smith and David Davis 😬
Eventually majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer found out about Southall’s spending, and announced he was withdrawing his funding from the club.
Nimer then sent out messages and voice notes on Instagram to fans explaining that Southall had been using his money on “Range Rovers and…bitches.”
Southall responded by posting a statement on the Charlton website saying that Nimer’s resignation had been accepted.
Nimer then responded on Instagram saying that he was staying, that he had given his proof/source of funds to the club’s legal team but they hadn’t submitted them to the EFL and that he was going to remove Southall as Chairman.
Southall then sacked Club Secretary Chris Parkes after ‘serious allegations made against him’, only for him to be cleared after a ‘full investigation’ and reinstated the next day.
Meanwhile, Nimer decided to post a copy of the contract of Southall’s £12.5k a month Tower Bridge flat on Instagram, complete with the address.
Southall then posted a statement on the club's website stating that he had the 'full backing' of the board. The 'board' was basically non-existent if Nimer had resigned as Southall alleged, meaning that Matt Southall put out a statement saying Matt Southall backed Matt Southall.
Matt Southall also tried to sue Jamie O’Hara via the club for a negative tweet. Nimer posted this on his Instagram too.
Southall’s partner jumped to his defence on Twitter, claiming it was #oneruleforone as she alleged that Nimer was also misusing club money.
I’m not too sure claiming that someone else is a crook *too* is the best defence against being called a crook, seeing as by definition that means you think you’re a crook. But hey, maybe that’s just me?
She also very tastefully tried to equate her partner being called a thieving bastard on Twitter because he was a thieving bastard to Caroline Flack’s death.
In a desperate attempt to cling on to power at #cafc, Matt Southall headed to the training ground with a camera crew in tow to film him embracing the players so that he’d give the impression he was supported by club staff. The whole squad blanked him.
That night, Nimer’s legal team submitted papers confirming Southall’s removal from his position as Chairman. In response, Southall attempted to sack anyone and everyone that tried to get him to leave the building.
The police were then called.
Southall then left.
...eventually.
Today, Nimer confirmed Southall’s removal as Chairman.
This means that in the space of ten days, there’s been statements on the club website with Matt Southall saying Tahnoon Nimer has left the club, and Tahnoon Nimer saying Matt Southall has left the club.

Southall’s position clearly being untenable didn’t stop him from pretending to carry on as normal however, as he issued several statements as ‘Chairman’, including one poorly pasted onto club letterhead.
Since I started this thread this morning, this letter has also emerged, seemingly from Nimer’s legal team. It claims that Southall attempted to put a hit out on Nimer’s lawyer. The account that posted it also claims that Southall wants Nimer killed too.
No idea if this is real or not obviously, but the way the last couple of weeks have been, I wouldn’t rule it out.
Anyway, that’s it all I think. To conclude, this bloke was the Chairman of a Championship football club.
