I'm often asked if NAD decline makes #COVID19 worse in the elderly. It's speculation at present. NAD is vital for >450 enzymes including for energy & sirtuins, which are anti-viral (e.g. HIV, Flu, CMV) but no human evidence exists.

Hyper-inflammation & organ damage can occur in #coronavirus patients. A study showed boosting NAD with nicotinamide riboside (NR) protects mice from damage in sepsis (bacterial proteins in blood) but another indicated the opposite..

My lab has tried to boost NAD to treat severe🐁sepsis and didn't see a significant difference. Bottom line: there isn't enough known to say if NAD might be relevant, helpful, or harmful in #COVIDー19 elderly. I'd like to know when my lab restarts, so please save blood samples 🙏
