Dr. Anthony Fauci just published a new article on COVID in the New England Journal of Medicine. We don't have to tell you who Dr. Fauci, or his job title, or his credentials, because those reading this tweet already know. This is what he said in his article:
"The median age of the patients was 59 years, with higher morbidity and mortality among the elderly and among those with coexisting conditions (similar to the situation with influenza). Of note, there were no cases in children younger than 15 years.
"Either children are less likely to become infected (with COVID), which would have important epidemiologic implications, or their symptoms were so mild that their infection escaped detection.
" If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%.
"This suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%)
"Community spread (of COVID) could require a shift from containment to mitigation strategies such as social distancing... (which) could include isolating ill persons (including voluntary isolation at home), school closures, and telecommuting where possible."
That's why the State of California shut down it's economy, ordered shelter in place, and the Mayor of Los Angeles is warning of "mass death." Because children are already immune and the fatality rate is "more akin to season influenza" = 0/1%. @mangan150
